Good plot and character development - a fun novel! There was obviously a lot of thought put into the various characters and story plot。 It paid off quite well, as I had to start this novel immediately upon finishing book 2 and didn’t put it down until I finished the entire thing。 That is a sign of an amazingly talented author。I liked that more time was giving to the supporting characters in this novel。 The interaction of Russian society to the past west coast Americans was fun, and by adding in t Good plot and character development - a fun novel! There was obviously a lot of thought put into the various characters and story plot。 It paid off quite well, as I had to start this novel immediately upon finishing book 2 and didn’t put it down until I finished the entire thing。 That is a sign of an amazingly talented author。I liked that more time was giving to the supporting characters in this novel。 The interaction of Russian society to the past west coast Americans was fun, and by adding in the grigori magic changed things for a better story。Introducing Lizbeth into a class society allowed us as we read along to understand more because often Lizbeth didn’t understand it herself。 Showing her that just because a woman and her daughters are provided for, does not mean they aren’t made of strong material, just differently then a Gunnie would be。 I wish more had been done with the Grand Duchess Xenia character, as she obviously was another strong woman in the series and her interactions with Lizbeth could have been humorous。Felicia misinterpretation of her age was an inspired choice。 I like in the end she explained she knew some spells possibly even better then her grigori tutors, and how she would use them to her benefit。 It will be interesting to see how the future develops from this perspective。Felix was an amazing layered character。 That he does love Eli was great, but that it was also true enough that he could allow Eli to find what’s right for him and Felix would hopefully find consolation in his connection with Lucy。 That is a purer form of love then most people could give。I’m not sure the Tsar truly needed to have Eli leave, but I do think he created such an excuse to allow one of his staunchest supporters to find a life outside of the HRE the only way he could。 Besides, it never hurts to have a loyal subject elsewhere to keep an eye open for future attempts on the crown。Hopefully the next book will released soon, I really enjoy this series! So will each book be a new area off the map? Does that mean at some point they might get to the nation of Hawaii? There could be lots of fun twists and turns incorporating that concept in the series。 。。。more

I’d have finished it last night if I hadn’t fallen asleep。 I couldn’t stop reading this third installment。 The fourth one doesn’t come out until 2022 maybe。 Part western, part romance, part dystopian novel and part alternative history, it’s got a lot of things going on。 I love these alternative history books where something happened to deviate the timeline from current events。 Like the North losing at Gettysburg or America loses the revolution。 Or America wins and keeps a monarchy instead of a p I’d have finished it last night if I hadn’t fallen asleep。 I couldn’t stop reading this third installment。 The fourth one doesn’t come out until 2022 maybe。 Part western, part romance, part dystopian novel and part alternative history, it’s got a lot of things going on。 I love these alternative history books where something happened to deviate the timeline from current events。 Like the North losing at Gettysburg or America loses the revolution。 Or America wins and keeps a monarchy instead of a president along with congress and the courts。 But an inherited monarchy of Washingtons。 What that could look like。 Speculating over the vagaries of what if based on the outcome of a major historical event going the opposite of how we know it went。 What happens next? Love that stuff。 I also loved these characters and can’t wait to see what happens next in this series! 。。。more

After reading this third installment in the gunnie Rose series, I'm a fan。 Charlaine creates an alternate history of America and sets it in the past, not the future。 As a hired gun with ethics the protagonist, Rose, only protects her clients, but in this novel she is on a mission to save her lover imprisoned in The Holy Russian Empire or California。 Her ethics will be tested。 Great read。 After reading this third installment in the gunnie Rose series, I'm a fan。 Charlaine creates an alternate history of America and sets it in the past, not the future。 As a hired gun with ethics the protagonist, Rose, only protects her clients, but in this novel she is on a mission to save her lover imprisoned in The Holy Russian Empire or California。 Her ethics will be tested。 Great read。 。。。more

Easy-to-read, fast-paced paranormal in an alternated world (c。 1930s?) where Russia controls California, Oregon, Washington。 Heroine is a gunnie -- gun-slinger -- trying to rescue her beloved from jail。 OverDrive suggested it after I tore through the two Greta Helsing book。 I decided to read it because RA conversations often include readers citing Charlaine Harris so I wanted to get a sense of her。 Short sentences, reasonably complicated world building, action-filled。 I thought her books were st Easy-to-read, fast-paced paranormal in an alternated world (c。 1930s?) where Russia controls California, Oregon, Washington。 Heroine is a gunnie -- gun-slinger -- trying to rescue her beloved from jail。 OverDrive suggested it after I tore through the two Greta Helsing book。 I decided to read it because RA conversations often include readers citing Charlaine Harris so I wanted to get a sense of her。 Short sentences, reasonably complicated world building, action-filled。 I thought her books were steamier -- this had just the mildest romance。 I bet the readalikes I have been suggesting are too dense, too complicated。 。。。more

Full disclosure- credit to First Look Book Club for providing the book。 I love Charlaine Harris and the Sookie Stackhouse series。 When I received this book, I wasn’t even aware of this new series from her。 At first I was hesitant and not sure I’d like to topic。 This was the third in the series。 I went back and read the first two before I read this one。 I loved the new heroine of the series, Lizbeth Rose and to quickly summarize, can’t wait for the next one!!

Book 3 has Gunny Rose stepping into Eli's world, The Holy Russian Empire。 After discovering that Eli has been taken prisoner, Lizbeth Rose begins the long trip to San Diego and world so different from her world that she is left reeling。 With the aid of her half-sister and a previous frenemy, Lizbeth does everything she can to free Eli from jail and clear his name of murder。 Although not as good as the first two books, The Russian Cage will still satisfy fans of the series。 Book 3 has Gunny Rose stepping into Eli's world, The Holy Russian Empire。 After discovering that Eli has been taken prisoner, Lizbeth Rose begins the long trip to San Diego and world so different from her world that she is left reeling。 With the aid of her half-sister and a previous frenemy, Lizbeth does everything she can to free Eli from jail and clear his name of murder。 Although not as good as the first two books, The Russian Cage will still satisfy fans of the series。 。。。more

I will not be continuing with this series。 I didn't actively disliked anything, so much as I found I was not invested in the story。 It was a new setting for our MC, a big city, but I wasn't grabbed and I found myself saying "Go ahead and finish this book, since you know you are a completist。" So I did。I won't be continuing with the series, because it did not hold my attention。 I will not be continuing with this series。 I didn't actively disliked anything, so much as I found I was not invested in the story。 It was a new setting for our MC, a big city, but I wasn't grabbed and I found myself saying "Go ahead and finish this book, since you know you are a completist。" So I did。I won't be continuing with the series, because it did not hold my attention。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I feel like I should start by stating I really liked the Sookie Stackhouse series, the Midnight, Texas books (at least the first couple), and pretty much everything else Harris has written minus Aurora Teagarden。 And I liked the first two books in this series。 So I came to this book with a positive attitude and expectations for an entertaining read。 I know Harris doesn't write books that are "intellectual" but she usually writes books that are fun and have fascinating characters。 This book was n I feel like I should start by stating I really liked the Sookie Stackhouse series, the Midnight, Texas books (at least the first couple), and pretty much everything else Harris has written minus Aurora Teagarden。 And I liked the first two books in this series。 So I came to this book with a positive attitude and expectations for an entertaining read。 I know Harris doesn't write books that are "intellectual" but she usually writes books that are fun and have fascinating characters。 This book was not entertaining and the characters are flat。 At best。 At worst, they're really really annoying。 There is no character development in the book, unless you count regression, which I suppose is some kind of development。 (Oh and Felicia suddenly being 15 instead of 11。 That is a HUGE difference at that age。) Lizbeth started out the series as a brave, decisive, interesting character。 In this book, she acts like she is a little slow。 She spends the entire book being helpless, frustrated, and confused。 She has to ask Eli how to get into bed on the sleeper train?? She can't figure out how to conceal a gun on her body? How has this woman stayed alive for this long? And she is tired/ exhausted/ weak from exertion (or whatever) for probably 90% of the book。 I admit, books where the protagonist never sleeps and just continues to save the day are silly, but this is the complete flip side of that。 Lizbeth is exhausted to the point of falling over after a few hours of being awake throughout the entire book。 Which is impressive considering how many regenerating baths she takes in the book as well。 As if that wasn't annoying enough, she's whiny。 She complains about almost everything。 Felicia talks to much, the Russians wear too many uniforms, the Grigori are weird, etc。 etc。 The internal inconsistencies are annoying too; the most glaring one being when Lizbeth is very annoyed that someone accuses her of being an assassin -- and then she proceeds to be exactly that。 Another one is when Felix shares how his mom died and then how she afterwards worked for the Savarovs。 Impressive。 (This one at least should have been caught by an editor。。。) The world building is basically non-existing, and the whole storyline is silly and boring at the same time。 Disappointing。 。。。more

An Amazing New World!Charlaine Harris has done it again - New America is a truly interesting place, and unlike anything else I’ve read。 Lizbeth Rose is a smart, direct, and totally fascinating character。 She’s talented, resourceful, and brave, and her adventures are great to share in。 I can’t wait for the next one。

Thank you to Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review。When I received this ARC, i knew it was part of a series so I have been taking my time getting through the previous books before reading this one – and I’m glad I did because the story takes place right after its predecessor。 This was an interesting novel, but I preferred the previous books in the series。 I don’t know exactly what was lacking in this installment for me: maybe it was the decreased banter or the slow-going plot。 Thank you to Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review。When I received this ARC, i knew it was part of a series so I have been taking my time getting through the previous books before reading this one – and I’m glad I did because the story takes place right after its predecessor。 This was an interesting novel, but I preferred the previous books in the series。 I don’t know exactly what was lacking in this installment for me: maybe it was the decreased banter or the slow-going plot。 Either way, whilst this was an interesting read with a good amount of violence, it wasn’t my absolute favourite。 If you are a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series like me, I think you might really like the Gunnie Rose series, so definitely check it out! 。。。more

Holy Russian Empire。。。 What a quick and quite comprehensive way to change it up a bit。 Loved that Lizbeth was taken out of comfort zone but didn't get as hurt this time。 Also Felicia is awesome, we need more of her 😁I loved how every additional story in this book got resolved, Peter and his antics, Felix and his antics 😅Looking forward to the next book in the series。 Holy Russian Empire。。。 What a quick and quite comprehensive way to change it up a bit。 Loved that Lizbeth was taken out of comfort zone but didn't get as hurt this time。 Also Felicia is awesome, we need more of her 😁I loved how every additional story in this book got resolved, Peter and his antics, Felix and his antics 😅Looking forward to the next book in the series。 。。。more

This latest Gunnie Rose is probably more compelling than the first two。 Harris bring completed characters to the table do you feel you’re sitting with them listening to them share their stories。 The world Harris created is frighteningly real given today’s unsettled times。 With the technological links and covert events, it’s easier to believe America could be divided in such a way。 Magic, mayhem, and morality—a recipe for a great book。

Kara Callahan

I enjoyed this book。 Her writing style is just kind of comfortable to me。

A nice addition to the series, this follows Gunnie Rose breaking her lover out of prison and dealing with the Russian Royalty。 I prefer the Western settings more, but this had nice progression of the characters story and overall was a satisfying read。

Who doesn't love Charlaine Harris? This is the third in a series。 Sort of like historical novels, but the history is imaginary。 Lots of action, lots of violence, lots of intrigue。 I think they would be great dramatized, but there may be too much violence? Great characters though。 Harris's writing is very conducive to seeing the action in your mind's eye。 Colorful and wild。 Who doesn't love Charlaine Harris?
